With over 4 million pet records, Animalcare maintain one of the largest pet microchip databases in the UK. Since its formation in 1988, Animalcare has built an enviable reputation in the world of veterinary care, supplying innovative, affordable animal care products from the Identichip microchip to pharmaceuticals.
9xb were delighted to win a pitch to start working with Animalcare back in 2011, as like us, the company takes pride in listening and understanding their customers’ needs before providing the perfect solution. Using the feedback they gain, the company then source and revise their products to fulfil pet owners’ needs.
With an already strong and enviable product range, the client continues to expand and build their offering throughout the UK and Europe whilst their powerful ‘Pet Database’- Anibase – offers UK pet owners the reassurance of chipping their beloved pet so if it’s lost, they have a much greater chance of finding it.
Through their success, the Anibase database had grown to over 4 million pet records, resulting in a creaking system in need of replacement. Old processes were time consuming and un-economical, whilst data security had grown in importance significantly. Essentially, technology had moved on and what Animalcare needed was a new online database that would take them forward for years to come.
The project brief from Animalcare was focused on developing the new ‘Anibase’ to hold the details of pets that have been fitted with a microchip, allowing lost or stolen pets to be quickly and easily reunited with their owners. The database was to be secure and robust whilst providing a simple, straight forward user interface, enabling vets, owners and Animalcare staff to register and maintain pet records around the clock.
Despite the huge amounts of data being handled by the site, Anibase launched successfully without incident, significantly reducing administration times, reducing user errors and allowing owner registration for the first time. The site provides a fully automated fulfilment service for client ordering via the integration of an offline printing solution requiring zero human intervention. A large proportion of the users are now choosing to register their new pets themselves online giving instant protection to the pet and dramatically reducing the volume of paperwork.
The new system has received superb feedback from owners and Animalcare staff, as well as achieving increased ‘buy in’ from vets whose lives have been made easier thanks to significantly reduced paperwork and administration. As part of this project 9xb converted a database of over 6 million pet and owner records from MsSQL to MySQL, improving data quality, speed of access and integrity.
