What’s The ‘Buzz’ About Google Buzz?

It’s easy to get a bit excited when Google announces something new. We immediately know it will be clever, yet supremely simple to use, and it will probably blow the other competition out of the water. So what about Google Buzz? What really is the buzz about it? Well, lets find out.

On first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is just like what we have already, with Twitter and Facebook, yet with the Google brand name conveniently attached to it. There’s always room for another social media network, but we’re pretty sure people will be looking for something different with a new social media app that launches, and to begin with, its hard to see what makes Google Buzz so special. If anything, it’s a little bit late in coming, and there’s a chance that people might turn their backs on it, as they can’t possibly find time to spend on Google Buzz as well as update their Twitter profile every hour. Still, there are some things that make Google Buzz, well, buzzworthy…

Firstly, there are the automatic friends lists, which might not be anything groundbreaking but it does help when friends are automatically added who you have emailed via Gmail.

Of course, if you’re a hotmail user and can’t bring yourself to switch email accounts, then Google Buzz might not appeal.

But wait…there’s something that really does appeal with Google Buzz, and it’s the no word limit feature. So you can ‘tweet’ or ‘buzz’ about yourself (this is not, I might add, the official name for it, but you get the idea) and there’s no 140 character limit restriction on your message. Good / bad? We like this – its simple and convenient like Twitter, but you get the chance to say that little bit more with it. People that like talking often get frustrated with Twitter and its character limit.

Other Google Buzz benefits? Use it on PC and mobile, and decide whether you want public or private sharing. This is a worthy addition.

The main thing here is that Google Buzz is linked to your Gmail, and it might take some time for people to decide if this is a feature they really wanted integrating into their email account. For others, its pure genius and Google has won again.

But Google isn’t stupid – they have clearly seen the potential here with the high number of Gmail users and the possibility of streamlining social media with an email account people regularly use. It makes sense, and it could take off in a big way. Watch this space – will it take on Facebook and Twitter? It might be something that just takes a while to get off the ground and attract the users, but when it does, we reckon there will be something good to come out of Google Buzz.
