9xb complete an IQ test with a difference

Gary Hartley 2nd October 2008

10 unfortunate members of the 9xb team volunteered themselves to take part in an IQ test with a difference, one not to test their intelligence or parts of their personality but, to test their eyes. Roll on the Hue colour IQ test, you may start….. now!

A traditional IQ Test

An Intelligence Quotient (IQ) indicates a person’s mental abilities relative to others of approximately the same age. IQ tests can reveal your key cognizant strengths and weaknesses, but to Joe public it serves merely to brag, mock and ridicule those with a lower score.

9xb takes a Hue IQ Test

Now we don’t care about the science behind the results, we just wanted an excuse to play a game and, like school children we’ll use the results to mock those with the worst score.

The instructions

The aim of the game is simple, arrange the coloured boxes in each row in hue order, from one colour through to another, with four rows in total to complete, simple.

The results

Who’s your money on?

Wow Joanne got a near perfect score, hats off to her that’s brilliant. Paul suffers from partial colour blindness, predominantly greens and yellows, so he can be excused. One thing is for certain, everyone who participated were partially blind after taking the test, complaining of seeing the world in squares, I guess the trick is to take the test quickly.

Take the test

How good do you think you are? Take the test then comment below with your score. Let us know how long you took and how many tries you had… and be honest

Today’s moral

Web designers and developers need a keen, razer-sharp eye when designing and building websites. The smallest deviation in colour and layout could render a design unprofessional, cast the wrong impression to visitors and potentially lose sales. Check your work once, twice and a third time, even get a colleague to double check it for you. Remember people remember the mistakes you make so do everything in your power to avoid them. As this test proves some people are better at looking for these mistakes than others so take personal responsibility over your own work. Quality should never come second.

Nice to see you studio folk have good eyesight and maybe that’s why Paul’s not a designer anymore
  2. Paul "Colour King" Carpenter says:
Hell. I was a web designer for 3 years!! Does anyone want to go back and check all the sites I did that are still around and make sure they’re not in purple and turquoise?
  3. Zoe says:
Is that why our logo is orange and green?

  5. Paul Carpenter says:
Our logo’s orange and green? I had it down as mauve and khaki! Sorry for imposing that on you all. Thanks Gary - you see how I got around my handicap there… cunning, eh?

I’m sure our scores have some psychological reference some how that we don’t know about, like the better the score the better at ’A’, ’B’ and ’C’ we are..
  13. Zoe says:
Maybe some of us have greater attention to detail? Are more careful? Perfectionists? Or just smarter when it comes to visual stuff?
